Current (2017) Tax Information
- Social Security Tax
- 6.2% on the first $127,200 of gross earnings for the year.
- Medicare Tax
- 1.45% on all gross earnings for the year,
plus (for employees only) an additional 0.9% on gross earnings over $200,000 for the year is withheld.
- Self-Employment Tax
- 15.3% on the first $127,200 of net earnings for the year, and
2.9% on net earnings above $127,200 but not over $200,000 for the year, and
3.8% on net earnings above $200,000 for the year.
Note that net earnings is reduced by 7.65% before computing this tax.
- Federal Unemployment Tax
- Officially, 6.0% on the first $7,000 of gross earnings of each employee for the year,
but if the employer is eligible for the 5.4% maximum credit for payment of state unemployment taxes, then the net rate is 0.6% on the first $7,000 of gross earnings of each employee for the year.
- State (Kansas) Unemployment Tax
- Rates vary from 0.20% to 7.60%, depending on each employer's experience rating.
The rate is assessed on the first $14,000 of gross earnings of each employee for the year.
